LAWASIA Moot Team 2009 Auditions

The auditions were held at the Moot Court on 20 March 2009, 9.30 p.m. A record number of students auditioned for the squad, i.e. 13 (a lucky number for some of you). Thank you to all you brave souls for having the guts to face a bench consisting of Mr Nazim G Shaari, Pn Mazlina Mahali, Cik Ummi Hani and yours truly. LAWASIA Update for UiTM mooters

I'm sorry if you were redirected here after googling LAWASIA. That is entirely Google's fault. But if you are a UiTM law student, then you've found what you're looking for.

The Workshop for LAWASIA kicked off around 9.30 with a 'Mooting 101' lecture by the Lifetime Dictator, Azinuddin Karim. Quite a bunch of people came, including a bunch of part-ones; which is a very good thing.

The not so good thing is that there are not as much female future mooters as I would've wished.

The Audition on the coming Friday is scheduled to 9.00 PM, as opposed to the time set out in the notice.

Therefore, we will see you at the Moot Court on Friday at approximately 9.00 PM.

Fellow Law Students,

The UiTM Mooting Club is looking for aspiring young mooters to represent UiTM in the LAWASIA Mooting Competition, scheduled on the 4th to the 5th of July this year.

For that reason, we are calling upon interested and committed individuals to participate as solicitors and subsequently audition as mooters for the said competition. Details of the audition are as follows:

The survey conducted on facebook with regards to the programme 'So, You Wanna Be A Lawyer?' has officially come to an end. Results are as follows:

Therefore, since most of the Moot Bench was occupied with Jessup and will be occupied with Maritime, it is then suggested that the above event be conducted in conjunction with the Inter Part Moot Competition, otherwise known as the Dean's Challenge Trophy next semester. Maybe somewhere in August.

Just keep your eyes out for the poster.

Maritime Moot 2009 alert!

Next monday we will kick off with a short course on carriage of goods by sea delivered by Dr. Irwin at the Moot Court around 9'ish'. It will be continued on Wednesday and be concluded on Friday. The short course will cover the basics of which will be dealt with in the moot problem. Inter alia, time charters, vessel seaworthiness etc.

Those of you who are interested to become a solicitor for Maritime are most welcome to join the class. Work on the memorials will begin the week after.

So the schedule for the carriage lecture specifically for the Maritime Moots are as follows:

There is also a vacancy in the Maritime Squad. Yes, only one. Therefore an audition will follow shortly after the last lecture on Friday. We are looking for female mooters. However, we do not mind if it's a male who makes it. It will be boring with only one girl in the team.

We didn't make it into the final rounds.

We are saddened.

We shall go to Brisbane to mend our broken hearts.

4 Charter-Parties, one grounded ship, stupid Master, no dry-docking clause, and a screwed up arbitrator.

Sounds much more fun than Jessup.

Cheer Squad Trip

The club is organizing a trip for you fellas who would like to watch the Jessup Moots in Universiti Malaya.

Be forewarned that we are not allowed to scout or sit in other teams' session. So you will only be allowed to sit in team UiTM's moot session. Which will be a problem since UM's moot courts are cute. So there wont be much seats.

So we are limiting the trip to only 20 participants. That plus the other people who are part of the cheer squad will keep the UM moot courts occupied.

The bus leaves at 8.30 AM on Friday, 20th February. Find the name list at the Cempaka buildings. If it's full.. then, get a ride in someone's car. We need all the support we can get. Thank you.

The moot problem has been out for quite some time. However due to some problems, the club decided not to pursue this year's competition.

But since the Dean has given her word to help out with the financial aspects of the moot, we may be able to send a team. This year's moot will be held in the TC Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland.

"I am talking about food, fun and fuzziness associated with prize giving and appreciation. Grand dinner la konsepnya....

It has been delayed for tooooo long. n rue and I have mooted (ironic giler) the idea of having it at the end of semester. maybe lepas exam. atau sebelum study week.

there are only two issues: money and venue.

financial wise, there are rumours of pending sponsorship which will be pushed for by the new moot bench.

what i want to really survey here is: WHERE DO WE EAT?

After extensive googling. I limit my proposed venues to only TWO.

the first being Soul-ed Out... located in Desa Sri hartamas. they cater for events and by the looks of it, they are a friendly and quirky bunch. just like we are. see more by clicking here:http://www.souledout.com.my/ (food looks excellent)

the second being the empress cafe, depan the laundry bar. kat the curve. very stylish cafe... nice food. and we can all come after watching a movie or sumthin.

that is my idea la basically, since the dinner (in my point of view) should be rather informal and never uptight with protocols. it sucks. period!

now with a new and fresh moot club in mind... what would be your honest opinion.

Proposal 01: "So, you wanna be a lawyer?"

It is not a question. But a programme that may/will be proposed to be held on Friday the 13th (March) for all students of UiTM's Law Faculty.

It is basically a one day event filled with a conference, tea-time talk, and a proper sit-down dinner.

SYWBAL will address those questions you've had in mind since the very first day you decided to join the profession while watching Ally McBeal or Boston Legal.

It will open your eyes to the rigours of the lawyering business, and the fun underlying the tedious paperwork, litigation and court appearances.

It, by all means; would not be your typical induction Q&A session, with you posing questions such as: "Lawyer punya gaji berapa?"

Interested? Look out for the poster sometime next week (after the AGM). Partipication may be limited.

The Lachs Moot

The-what-moot? Space?

Why hasn't UiTM participated in this one?

"The Lachs Moot began in 1992 and is organised annually by the International Institute of Space Law (I.I.S.L.).  Each year, the winners of the Asia Pacific, European and North American Regional Rounds compete in the world finals, held in conjunction with the annual International Astronautical Congress and the Colloquium on the Law of Outer Space.

The Lachs Moot has the distinction of having its world final judged each year by three sitting members of the International Court of Justice.

To participate in the Lachs Moot, 2 to 3 committed law students interested in expanding their knowledge of international law and gain valuable international mooting experience are all that is needed.  According to past participants, coaches and judges, the Lachs Moot is an enjoyable experience for all involved."

Training begins

Monday. 19th January 2009. Around 8 PM, at the Moot Court.

The Jessup Mooters begin their oral training.

Tuan Hurman gave them the theme for this year's Jessup.

He promises to teach them the smirk.

Zin and Rue (the vets) will be on the Respondent side. While Din, Ika and Afif will alternate between them on the Applicant side.

They have about a month.

Pray that they stay strong and focused.

Jessup Update

The new National Administrator for this year's competition is Assoc Prof Dr Azmi Sharom. If you have not heard of him before, then you must been lost in the Amazon rain forest for the last few years. He has a hugely popular column in the Star (Malaysia). He is a rare personality among civil servants because he has the courage to speak his mind in public. The administration of this year's competition will probably be very interesting. Further information for the members of the Azmi Sharom appreciation club, 'yes' he still does have his pony tail. By the way, the memorial team is putting the finishing touches on the memorials as both of these must be submitted by Monday, 12 January 2008 (This is a hint to the memorial team to expedite matters).

Part One Induction

An induction programme was made for the noobs of BLS today. Three reps from the club became facilitators and one had been allowed to ramble and promote the club in front of the 180 or so noobs.

He had in fact forgotten to mention about the blog and the Facebook group. However, he was given a second chance during the end of the induction and had promptly seized the opportunity to tell them noobs to google the club.

He hopes that at least a handful of them would submit to the will of the club. For there will always be food for those who fancy research and lawyering business.

As the joker who represented the club had managed to waffle during his pathetic speech, "The business of the club is built upon three Ms. Moot, Memorials, and Makan."

He was corrected by Dr. Irwin. The Three M's should in fact be: Meat, Meat and Meat.

Pity those who join this club. They are bound to be fed (fat?).

Let's just see how many will turn up for the AGM.

I suppose this page will also be used to document the culinary adventures of the Moot / Meat Club ... so no vegetarians allowed!

Join the Moot Club!

As most of you would probably have noticed, results are out. That basically signals the beginning of a new term.

New term is then logically followed by a bunch of younglings affectionately known as noobs. These noobs will come to you seniors asking "What activities can I join while being held captive in this dreaded faculty?", or "What kind of associations or clubs do the law students join?" or, the old time favourite, "Bro, what the heck is mooting?".

So guide them babies over to the Moot Club. All you really need is a thirst for the lawyering business and a Facebook account.

Why Facebook?

Well, it has occurred to us that there have been complaints that the club's activities are not widely made known to the public, there's not enough notices, they can't see them notices, and again the all time favourite, they don't even know what the heck it is in the first place. So, by having the club on Facebook and Blogger, these geniuses will have less to complain about. Activities and updates will be made known via the group's message board. And further complaints can be made via the group's wall. Plus, for those who really care, they can start reading the blog and maybe post a little something in the comments section.

Anything else I missed?

Oh yes, the AGM. Well, honestly we have no idea.. yet.

We lost against ATC. Though in a state of denial, we don't really feel sad. We had fun; which was the only thing we had in mind when deciding to join IHL at the very last minute.

ATC will be representing Malaysia to Hong Kong. They will carry and pass our love and affection to Mickey and the gang at Disneyland HK.

Meanwhile, the rest of the team will report to AL529 to finish what is left to be done for the Jessup memorials.

One moot after another... Seriously. We need a life.

IHL Finals

We are currently in UM, training for the finals against the prosecution team of ATC.

The defence team (Zin and Tammy) is making their final preparations. They were the only defence team which got more than 700 total marks. The prosecution team (Izmil and Alia) were only 6 marks behind the top prosecution team (ATC).

It is the submission of these people that it would be unlikely for the organizers to allow both teams from the same university to meet at finals. It would be utterly unfair.

Pray for us.

Somebody is dreaming of a trip to Hong Kong.

IHL Update

However tempting it would be to ramble on the events in the Moot Court; I am sad to inform you that these activities are classified.

IHL & Jessup Status Update

Around 10 PM of the 2nd of December, we successfully submitted both briefs for the Prosecution and Defence. Alhamdulillah.

Today around 3.00 PM reps of the team will be going to ICRC (in the same building with Skrine) to draw lots and exchange memorials.

Meanwhile, Jessup memorials have kicked off with the first, third and fourth ground in full motion. The second ground is lagging quite a bit due to the hold up caused by IHL. Will get that part moving once the blokes doing that part comes back from Penang and Seremban respectively.

And so it begins

Public International Law can never be understood within six hours. Learning about the ICJ, IHL, UN, HR, use of force etc. is a lot to digest in one day. Kudos to those who got A for both IL One and Two papers. IL is indeed complicated stuff.

So the Jessup team met today at AL529 and was given a crash course on what is public international law. Thank you Miss Ummi, Puan Fidah and off course Dr. Irwin for sacrificing their time for the team, and ultimately for UiTM for that matter. They are indeed very committed educators.*ehem.. (Dato VC are you reading this?)

We kicked off with a dose of introduction to the ICJ, the UN, and the use of force. Lunch. Prayers. And another dose of IHL and human rights before adjourning to the computer lab to look at the relevant sites for research purposes.

Talking about IHL, it saddens us that we may be (truly are) unable to send a team to the IHL Moots since the memorials are to be submitted on the 2nd of December. So, sorry ICRC.

Tomorrow will be consultations for the auditions and a taste of the Moot Club tradition after all is done. 

A note on the auditons on the 26th. It will start around 2.00 PM before a bench of three adjudicators. Court room attire.

Moot Club on Faceebok

So the people writing this blog got extra bored and coined up the idea to put the club on Facebook; since everyone and their mothers are tinkering their Facebook accounts every now and then.

So, if you are interested, please join the group. Otherwise, it will remain to be the lonely sad group that it already is. Search for it in the 'Groups' section of Facebook. Or if you don't fancy too much typing, click here.

As the current president of the club likes to say, "This club is a niche society. The lesser people to work with, the better. More food for us."

The club is currently waiting for the 24th.

The club is also waiting for the 25th, which is a Tuesday. UiTM mooters love Tuesdays.

IHL Moot

I am currently struggling to search for the moot problem (IHL) on line. Beats me whether it is available online or not in the first place. The hard copy is said to be in the hands of Pn. Azlena.

However, extensive googling has resulted in the additional links on the right. Feel free to browse through. There might be competition from USIM for Jessup this year. Wonder if UUM has decided to join the band-wagon. Also amazing to see how serious HKU takes mooting. UiTM only has a blog. They have a whole system.

Be that as it may, one question still lingers - Who's actually doing the preparation to actually host the national rounds? It bothers me that we are still vaguely sure of where and when we are supposed to moot. Potential mooters are currently making travel arrangements to spend the holidays with family members. It worries me.

Talking about vagueness, it so happens that there are openings calling for participation for the IHL moots which is purported to be held around the same time with Jessup. Would anyone be willing to surrender their necks to the IHL team? Jessup only needs 5 mooters. The solicitors can multi-task for both questions.

In case of any confusions or questions, please pester Dr. Irwin. You know where he is if he's not making green tea in front of his office. If you're intimidated by his cuteness, search for Pn. Rafidah or Miss Ummi. Though they are equally cute come to think of it.

Personally, the editor of this blog does not fancy moot competitions that doesn't promise free trips overseas.
